A nisse (Danish:, Norwegian: [ˈnɪ̂sːə]), tomte (Swedish: [ˈtɔ̂mːtɛ]), tomtenisse, or tonttu (Finnish:) is a mythological creature from Nordic folklore today typically associated with the winter solstice and the Christmas season.
Swedish gnomes are sometimes called Nisse too, but the more common name is Tomte. Like the Norwegians, Swedes believe that the Tomte is a create that safeguards farmers and their homes. When Christianisation began, it became a frightful thing to be accused of having a Tomte in your farm.
