Welcome to an explanation of basic squeeze plays, as used in the game of bridge. There are a great many websites where you can see examples and learn about this fascinating play, but I hope to present the material in simple terms, easy to learn, and then encourage you to visit those other sites.
A squeeze play (or squeeze) is a technique used in contract bridge and other trick-taking games in which the play of a card (the squeeze card) forces an opponent to discard a winner or the guard of a potential winner. The situation typically occurs in the end game, with only a few cards remaining.
Squeeze - To make a play that forces the opponent to discard a card which might otherwise become a winner; in preparation for the squeeze, the declarer typically must "rectify the count" and hold threat (menace) cards.
The simple squeeze is the most basic form of a squeeze in the game of contract bridge. By playing a winner in one suit, an opponent is squeezed out of a winner in a different suit.
