sloth, (suborder Folivora), tree-dwelling mammal noted for its slowness of movement. All six living species are limited to the lowland tropical forests of South and Central America , where they can be found high in the forest canopy sunning, resting, or feeding on leaves .
Suborder: Folivora. Sloths are Xenarthran mammals from Central and South America. They are part of the order Pilosa. There are two families of sloths: two-toed sloth and three-toed sloth. Most scientists call these two families the Folivora, while some call them the Phyllophaga. [1]
Species. Choloepus didactylus. Choloepus hoffmanni. Choloepus is a genus of xenarthran mammals of Central and South America within the monotypic family Choloepodidae, consisting of two-toed sloths, [3] sometimes also called two-fingered sloths. [4]
The brown-throated sloth is the most widespread and common of the three-toed sloths. It is found from Honduras in the north, through Nicaragua , Costa Rica and Panama into Venezuela , Colombia , Ecuador , Bolivia , Brazil and eastern Peru .
