Brand’s father, an engineer, was in his 50s when her social worker mother persuaded him to seek psychiatric help.
Her mother was a social worker at Charing Cross Hospital and her father was a structural engineer. Her father suffered from depression and her parents separated when Brand was a teenager. Brand is the middle of three children, with two brothers.
