Mostly elusive, but occasional males go "rogue" and attack hikers. Groups of males display just after dawn in early spring, holding their tail raised and fanned like a turkey.
How to identify. Male capercaillie are huge birds, with glossy black bodies, tinged green on the breast, and brown wings. They have a strong, yellow bill and a red mark above the eye. Females are smaller and largely brown with darker barring.

Identification Tips. The male Western Capercaillie, or cock, is a majestic bird with a length ranging from 74 to 85 centimeters and a wingspan stretching from 90 to 125 centimeters. Weighing an average of 4.1 kilograms, the cock boasts dark grey to dark brown body feathers and a lustrous dark metallic green on the breast.
