In 2018, a new port of entry was opened next to the New River with modern installations, but for now it's used for vehicles, the pedestrian port hasn't changed, however, there are plans to modernize the pedestrian port that includes use the old building of the first port of entry for a temporary pedestrian port to rebuild a new one.

Since April 2020, drivers crossing through the Calexico West Land Port of Entry have seen increased construction activity at the port. They may have asked themselves, ‘I wonder what they’re building over there?’. Well, wonder no more.
The project includes demolition, realignment, relocation, and new construction at the existing site of Calexico Port of Entry. Two-way flow of traffic through the border station will be realigned, expanded, and optimized.
