These large-billed, blocky-headed cormorants have a white throat patch and in breeding season a white patch on the thigh. They feed mostly on bottom-dwelling fish captured during dives. Like other cormorants their plumage has limited waterproofing, and they often stand on rocks with their wings outstretched to dry.
The White-breasted Cormorant, Phalacrocorax lucidus, is a striking bird, akin to the Great Cormorant in stature and habit. Adults boast a distinctive white neck and breast, which becomes more pronounced with age.
The white-breasted cormorant is much like the widespread great cormorant and if not a regional variant of the same species, is at least very closely related. It is distinguished from other forms of the great cormorant by its white breast and by the fact that subpopulations are freshwater birds.
