The high performance 440 was standard in the GTX as was the TorqueFlite automatic transmission, while it was an extra cost option in the Road Runner. The GTX used the Sport Satellite trim and was offered in two body styles, a two-door convertible and a two-door hardtop (no B-pillar).
24 de sept. de 2018 · The 440 four-barrel engine, previously relegated to the upscale GTX model, became a Road Runner option and included GTX emblems on the front fenders and decklid. For just under $3,100, the 1972 Road Runner included the 400 with dual exhaust, a floor-shifted three-speed manual, and a 3.23-geared rear end.
The 280 hp (209 kW) 440 engine was the basis for the Road Runner GTX (the GTX was no longer a separate model) and was available on Road Runners from 1972 to 1974. The 1971-72 Road Runner sheet metal was used by several NASCAR racing teams for their racecars and ran well on the circuit during the 1971-74 seasons.

The Plymouth Roadrunner 440, the most powerful one next to the HEMI, was rebadged as the Roadrunner GTX. This continued till 1974 and the GTX finally retired.
