Peter Self, c. 1960. Peter John Otter Self (7 June 1919 – 29 March 1999) was an English journalist, academic, planning policy-maker and university teacher of planning. Self was born in Brighton, to Audrey (Otter) and Henry Self, a civil servant.
This book gives a concise, non- technical account of these 'public choice' theories and examines their influence upon government policies in English-speaking countries. Issues covered include slimming the state, privatising welfare and re- structuring government.

Peter Self (1919-1999) was a participant in the policy-making domain as well as a distinguished academic. This assessment is primarily concerned with his contribution to the academic study of political science, including the sub-disciplines of public policy and public administration.
After analysing the external pressures which have shaped modern governments, the author examines four different schools of political thought which seek to explain the behaviour and performance of governments, and which offer different remedies for the pluralism, corporatism and bureaucracy.
