Norman Earl Thagard (born July 3, 1943; Capt, USMC, Ret.), is an American scientist and former U.S. Marine Corps officer and naval aviator and NASA astronaut. He is the first American to ride to space on board a Russian vehicle, and can be considered the first American cosmonaut.
Norm Thagard s NASA-1 mission was all about learning. Thagard symbolized the fledgling Shuttle-Mir Program as he launched from Kazakhstan on a Soyuz rocket with his Commander Vladimir Dezhurov and Flight Engineer Gennady Strekalov.

Norman Thagard was the first American astronaut to train in Russia, the first to launch aboard a Soyuz (with cosmonauts Vladimir Dezhurov and Gennady Strekalov), and the first to complete a residency aboard Mir, setting an American space endurance record of 115 days in orbit, March 14 - July 7, 1995.
