Irving Ezra Segal (1918–1998) was an American mathematician known for work on theoretical quantum mechanics. He shares credit for what is often referred to as the Segal–Shale–Weil representation.

September 3, 1998. CAMBRIDGE, MA-- MIT Professor Emeritus Irving Segal, 79, a pioneer in the fields of functional analysis and harmonic analysis, died unexpectedly while walking near his home in Lexington, MA, on Sunday evening (Aug. 30).
Irving E. Segal was a mathematician renowned for his pioneering developments in quantum field theory, func-tional and harmonic analysis and for his now ubiquitous concept of C∗-algebra. Almost all of Irving Segal’s work was motivated by mathematical problems of funda-mental physics.
