Tobias Mayer (Marbach am Neckar, Baden-Wurtemberg, Alemania,17 de febrero de 1723-Gotinga, Alemania, 20 de febrero de 1762) fue un astrónomo y cartógrafo alemán, padre del físico Johann Tobias Mayer (1752-1830), con quien no debe ser confundido.
Tobias Mayer (17 February 1723 – 20 February 1762) was a German astronomer famous for his studies of the Moon . He was born at Marbach, in Württemberg, and brought up at Esslingen in poor circumstances. A self-taught mathematician, he earned a living by teaching mathematics while still a youth.
Tobias Mayer fue un astrónomo autodidacta que fue ascendiendo desde la pobreza más extrema, ya que a los ocho años se quedó huérfano, hasta ser un prestigioso cartógrafo, catedrático y primer director del observatorio astronómico de la Universidad de Göttingen.
Johann Tobias Mayer was a German astronomer who developed lunar tables that greatly assisted navigators in determining longitude at sea. Mayer also discovered the libration (or apparent wobbling) of the Moon. A self-taught mathematician, Mayer had already published two original geometrical works.
