Sir Henry John Delves Broughton, 11th Baronet, DL (10 September 1883 – 5 December 1942), was a British baronet who is chiefly known for standing trial for the murder of the 22nd Earl of Erroll. The event was the basis of the film White Mischief and of the British television drama The Happy Valley , both from 1987.
Although Delves Broughton was charged and tried, he was acquitted of the murder. Numerous books, movies (including White Mischief ) and articles have been written on the murder mystery and various theories have been argued; however, the murder remains officially unsolved.
The film dramatises the events of the Happy Valley murder case in Kenya in 1941, wherein Sir Henry “Jock” Delves Broughton was tried for the murder of Josslyn Hay, 22nd Earl of Erroll. The cast also includes Sarah Miles, Geraldine Chaplin, and Ray McAnally, Murray Head, John Hurt, and Trevor Howard.
