Ông tham gia Kháng chiến chống Pháp, Kháng chiến chống Mỹ và Chiến tranh biên giới Tây Nam. Ông là người trực tiếp chỉ huy trận đánh đồi A1 trong Chiến dịch Điện Biên Phủ.
