Massasoit Sachem (/ ˌ m æ s ə ˈ s ɔɪ (ɪ) t / MASS-ə-SOYT, - SOY-it) [1] [2] or Ousamequin (c. 1581 – 1661) [3] was the sachem or leader of the Wampanoag confederacy. Massasoit means Great Sachem. Although Massasoit was only his title, English colonists mistook it as his name and it stuck. [4]

Massasoit (also given as Massasoyt) is a title meaning Great Sachem; his given name was Ousamequin of the Pokanoket tribe of modern-day Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
Massasoit was the grand sachem of the Wampanoag Indians, who lived in present Massachusetts and Rhode Island. He maintained peaceful relations with the English settlers of Plymouth Colony for many years, but his legacy was challenged by his son Philip's war.

As leader of the Wampanoag, Massasoit exercised control over a number of Indian groups that occupied lands from Narragansett Bay to Cape Cod in present-day Massachusetts.
