Dame Melanie Henrietta Dawes DCB (born 9 March 1966) is a British economist and administrator. Since February 2020 she has been Chief Executive of Ofcom.
Dame Melanie Dawes joined Ofcom as an Executive Board Member and Chief Executive in March 2020. Prior to joining Ofcom, Melanie was Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government from 2015.
Melanie Dawes is a former Permanent Secretary for DCLG and the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. She has also worked at the Cabinet Office, HMRC, the Treasury and the European Commission.
Melanie Dawes was the Chief Executive of Ofcom, the UK's communications regulator, from 2018 to 2023. She led Ofcom's work across broadcasting, media, spectrum, online safety, networks and telecoms sectors.
Dame Melanie Dawes, former Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, will take up the role of Ofcom Chief Executive in early March. She will lead the organisation as it prepares to regulate online harms and faces other challenges in the media and telecoms sectors.
