Bonar Law (born September 16, 1858, Kingston, New Brunswick, Canada—died October 30, 1923, London, England) was the prime minister of Great Britain from October 23, 1922, to May 20, 1923, the first holder of that office to come from a British overseas possession.
British statesman and Conservative prime minister (1922–23). Born in Canada and brought up in Scotland, Bonar Law entered parliament as a Conservative member in 1900 and became party leader in 1911.
Bonar Law was leader of the Conservative Party in Britain during the war. He entered Asquith’s coalition government in May 1915, and in December 1916 played a crucial role in Lloyd George becoming Prime Minister. For the rest of the war, he was a key figure in the British War Cabinet.
Bonar Law was the shortest serving Prime Minister of the 20th Century, being in office for just 209 days. He was gravely ill when he took the office and did not have enough time to achieve anything with his premiership.
