BC Records :: 2009. Cry, Want is the second record by Clarinet Thing -- our first as a quartet. Clarinet Thing was founded twenty years ago by Beth Custer when she wrote a letter (typewritten -- this was before email!) to several of her fellow clarinetists suggesting that we start a band.
This was the beginning of my creative musical path; in the years since then, I have continued to work with and cultivate the musical forces that were present at that time – research, education, musical fundamentals, diligence, attention to detail, and a relentless pursuit of truth.
Clarinetist Ben Goldberg is an inventive improviser, composer, and musical theorist who has consistently challenged not only the role his chosen instrument plays in jazz, but also in new music, klezmer, classical, and pop.
