For some people, especially those new to the Book of Mormon, a most challenging or unsettling story is Nephi’s slaying of Laban (see 1 Nephi 3–4). Couldn’t Nephi have just taken Laban’s clothes, retrieved the plates, and then left with Zoram?
Killing of Laban. The story of the Killing of Laban, where Nephi kills Laban, is found near the beginning of the Book of Mormon. After the family of Lehi flees Jerusalem and sets up a camp in the wilderness, Nephi sends his four sons back to Jerusalem to obtain a set of brass plates from a religious leader named Laban.
The Lord commands Nephi to slay ... Courageously, Nephi returns alone to Jerusalem in search of Laban and the plates. He finds Laban lying drunk in the streets.
Nephi ( / ˈniːˌfaɪ /) [1] is one of the central figures described in the Book of Mormon. In the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he is described as the son of Lehi, a prophet, and the founder of the Nephite people. The Book of Mormon also describes him as the author of its first two books, First and Second Nephi .
Laban attempts to kill them two times, and the second time he steals the Lehi family fortune. Later, Nephi sneaks into Jerusalem and discovers Laban lying drunk in the road.
