El día 21 de febrero de 1804, la locomotora de Richard bajo el nombre de “Penydarren” realizó con éxito su viaje en cuatro horas y cinco minutos, transportando unas 25 toneladas de hierro, equipos y 70 personas en el tren. El secreto de su diseño de la máquina de vapor estaba en la presión.
