Sir Francis Chichester (born September 17, 1901, Barnstaple, Devon, England—died August 26, 1972, Plymouth, Devon) was an adventurer who in 1966–67 sailed around the world alone in a 55-foot sailing yacht, the “Gipsy Moth IV.” As a young man he worked in New Zealand as a miner, salesman, and land agent.
