Daniel Roland Lanois CM (/ l æ n ˈ w ɑː / lan-WAH, French:; born September 19, 1951) is a Canadian record producer and musician. He has produced albums by artists including Bob Dylan , Neil Young , Peter Gabriel , Robbie Robertson , Emmylou Harris , Willie Nelson , Spoons , and Brandon Flowers .

In 1983, he had his first recording experience when he recorded the album Apollo with his brother Brian Eno and Canadian producer and musician Daniel Lanois at Lanois' Grant Avenue Studios in Hamilton, Ontario.

As a true audiophile, he seems to be marinating in centuries of sound waves, honing in on some of history’s most visceral musical compositions. It’s as though he pulls rhythms directly from the ground and resonant frequencies from the stratosphere.
Lanois now lives and works in several locations—among them, Los Angeles—and continues to produce, compose, record, and perform live. We begin the interview with questions about these places, and about what impact place in general has had on his work.
