Born Again Savage was a return to the raw, garage rock sound of his second album, Voice of America from 1984. The main topic of the album is religion. The rhythm section on all songs is bassist Adam Clayton (of U2) and drummer Jason Bonham. Jean Beauvoir, who was one of the original Disciples of Soul, sang background vocals on the album.

Jason John Bonham (born 15 July 1966) is an English drummer. He is the son of Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham. Since his father's death in September 1980, he has performed with the surviving three members of Led Zeppelin on several occasions, including the Ahmet Ertegun Tribute Concert at O 2 arena in London in December 2007.

In stead of "The Dicsiples," Stevie has Adam Clayton, a band member from the famous pop band U2,and Jason Bonham. Born Again Savage comes in a jewel case with a book of lyricks on the inside.

His fifth album, 1999's Born Again Savage, is a ferocious return to a raw garage rock sound inspired by the hard rock pioneers of his youth (think Cream, The Who, The Yardbirds, Led Zeppelin). Jason Bonham (drums) and Adam Clayton (bass) joined writer-arranger-producer Van Zandt for what would be his final album until 2017's Soulfire .
