  1. Henry Charles Howard, 13th Duke of Norfolk, KG, PC (12 August 1791 – 18 February 1856), styled Earl of Surrey between 1815 and 1842, was a British Whig politician and peer.

  2. The Howard family is an English noble family founded by John Howard, who was created Duke of Norfolk (third creation) by King Richard III of England in 1483. However, John was also the eldest grandson (although maternal) of the 1st Duke of the first creation.

  3. The title then passed to his son in 1842, Henry Howard, 13th Duke of Norfolk, who was the father of Henry Fitzalan-Howard, 14th Duke of Norfolk, and Edward Fitzalan-Howard, 1st Baron Howard of Glossop.

  4. From 1815 or shortly after, the main line divides into two: the Dukes of Norfolk and the Howards of Glossop. The 12th and 13th Dukes were both Lords of the Manor until 1850, when the 13th Duke’s second son, Edward George, became Lord Howard of Glossop, confirmed by a Barony in 1869.
