George Derek Fleetwood Bell, MBE (21 October 1935 – 17 October 2002) was a Northern Irish harpist, pianist, oboist, musicologist and composer who was best known for his accompaniment work on various instruments with The Chieftains.
He joined the Chieftains as a fulltime member in 1974 with his appearance on the Chieftains 4 release. He had guested with them several times up to this, particularly on some Turlough O’ Carolan (the legendary 17th century blind Irish harper) arrangements performed in Ireland.
The Chieftains 4. ‘The Chieftains 4’ was recorded in a single weekend in early 1974 in London, and contained, as well as an ambitious composition ‘The Battle of Aughrim’ from Paddy Moloney, and the harp, played by Derek Bell, which added a new dimension to their music.
