All four species of swans found in North America have been spotted in Ohio. They are the Trumpeter Swan, Mute Swan, Tundra Swan, and Whooper Swan.
Trumpeter Swans demand superlatives: they’re our biggest native waterfowl, stretching to 6 feet in length and weighing more than 25 pounds - almost twice as massive as a Tundra Swan. Getting airborne requires a lumbering takeoff along a 100-yard runway. Despite their size, this once-endangered, now recovering species is as elegant as any swan, with a graceful neck and snowy-white plumage.
The trumpeter swan (Cygnus buccinator) is native to Ohio and the nation's largest waterfowl. Their populations once experienced severe declines. They were killed for food and skins, first by Native Americans and then by Europeans.
They nest on boreal marshes of Canada, and migrate through Ohio on their way to Atlantic coast wintering grounds. Their brassy calls, raining down from high-flying flocks in November and December, are one of the real treats of late fall birding here.
