The pair recorded a series of demos which set aside experimentation in favour of more conventional performances on guitar and keyboards. This work paved the way for ‘hours…’, David Bowie’s final album of the 20th century.
Originating as a soundtrack to the video game Omikron: The Nomad Soul (1999), Hours was the final collaboration between Bowie and guitarist Reeves Gabrels, with whom he had worked since 1988. The album was recorded in mid-1999 between studios in Bermuda and New York City.
Gabrels continued to work with Bowie until 1999, co-writing and co-producing material on the albums Outside (1995), Earthling (1997), and Hours (1999). "Dead Man Walking," a Bowie/Gabrels song from Earthling , was nominated for a Grammy award.

Hours was the first Bowie studio album to miss the US top 40 since his 1972 album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars and peaked at number 47. Bowie and Gabrels wrote the songs for both Hours and the adventure video game Omikron: The Nomad Soul at the same time.
