This quartet album, with Ehrlich and Stan Strickland on reeds, Lindsey Horner on bass, and Bobby Previte on drums, has always reminded me of Dave Holland's Conference of the Birds, although The Traveller's Tale is less experimental, more grounded in jazz - I hear the pieces on The Traveller's Tale as individual jazz numbers whereas I hear Conference of the Birds as a transcendent suite.
Pliant Plaint mixes swing, double-time, stop-time, two-beat, shuffle, and textural rhythms. Six distinct melodic phrases move over or within these rhythms in a "pliant" manner.
