She also formed her own group, the Lindsay Cooper Film Music Orchestra; they wrote and performed many film and TV scores, such as that for Sally Potter's debut feature film, The Gold Diggers. The 1980s saw Cooper found the band News from Babel together with Chris Cutler, Dagmar Krause, and Zeena Parkins.
