  1. Academy of Our Lady and Spalding Institute were Catholic high schools across the street from each other in downtown Peoria, Illinois. The Academy (AOL), a girls' school, traced its lineage back to 1863.

  2. In 1882 Bishop Spalding went to Rome to obtain Pope Leo XIII’s permission for the new school. Mary Gwendoline Caldwell, a family friend of the Bishop, pledged $300,000 toward the construction of the new campus. The property across from the Academy of Our Lady on Madison Street was available.

A Catholic high school for young men was founded in 1899, named Spalding Institute after Reverend Ben J. Spalding, the brother of Bishop John L. Spalding, founder of the Catholic Diocese of Peoria.
