The MTR13 Retro acoustic guitar strings represent yet another quality, vintage-inspired set of strings in Martin’s Retro line. Encouraged by legendary bluegrass player Tony Rice, Martin was inspired to bring back the tone of 1930s strings, when nickel ruled the acoustic world.
Ten minutes later, 58957 is back in its pretty new carbon-fiber case, the plain leather strap still attached to the pegs and laid out over the strings. Rice sighs deeply before closing the lid: “It’s a beautiful instrument. I never pick it up but that I don’t think that. It’s got to be the Holy Grail.”
After many years endorsing strings from other manufacturers, Tony Rice now has a signature set from Martin. He has long favored strings made with monel, a nickel-based alloy, rather than steel. In fact he used Martin’s monel strings as a younger artist, until they were discontinued more than 30 years ago.
Legendary Bluegrass artist, Tony Rice, played Martin Monel strings religiously on Clarence White's 1935 D28 until they became unavailable in the 1970's and he has been missing them ever since.
Lightfoot and Rice go way back. Rice covered “Home from the Forest” on Manzanita in 1979, “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” on his 1983 album Church Street Blues, and e ventually recorded enough Lightfoot songs to fill an entire compilation, 1996’s Tony Rice Sings Gordon Lightfoot (Rounder).
