At novel's end, Hoyle hints that this transformation may be some test by a vague galactic overmind (my words, not Hoyle's) who wants Man to continue to evolve rather than consciously choose stasis as have the humans of 6,000 years hence. I liked the set up of this novel, the detail deductions revealing the information being beamed toward the sun.
