5 de jun. de 1999 · Cockroaches are an ancient and highly successful form of insect life. They have been in existence since Pennsylvanian (Upper Carboniferous) times. The fossil record indicates that they achieved an optimum body form early in their evolutionary history and have remained a very stable group since that time (Moore et al. 1952).

If they are close to dehydration, then a cockroach will not breathe for up to 40 minutes. They can carry 33 kinds of bacteria, six different types of parasitic worms, and seven known pathogens.

The fastest start time clocked by a cockroach was just 8.2 milliseconds after it sensed a puff of air on its rear end. However, there is a great deal of variability in cockroach locomotion including swimming and flying. Although many cockroach species are wingless, some species are strong fliers and sexual dimorphism in presence/absence of wings is not uncommon.
