Today Gerald Alston and Troy May announced that they have added a third member, longtime Philadelphia singer Lawrence "Weas" Newton. The powerful baritone has had a long career working with such artists as Grover Washington, Patti LaBelle and Bootsy Collins.
He currently has the pleasure of performing with the Legendary “Manhattans” featuring Gerald Alston. While more than willing to share the spotlight, Lawrence is a more than capable lead and solo performer. He has served as Band Leader for his own band, “The Soul Revival” for the last 10 years.
All five Manhattans boys got to know each other already in the 50s. “All five of us met during the high school days. Sonny Bivins, Kenneth Kelly and myself went to Lincoln, and Richard Taylor and George Smith went to Snyder, which were competing high schools in Jersey City.”. In the late 50s Blue was drafted.
Alston and May vowed to continue performing, and in July of 2022 announced the addition of Philly-based singer Lawrence "Weas" Newton, as they readied their international tour. We look forward to the remaining members continuing the legacy of those five men who first came together on this day in 1962.
