Recorded before Joan Jett formed The Blackhearts, the majority of the album featured Jett backed by members of the Roll-Ups, with Lea Hart on guitar, Jeff Peters on bass and Paul Simmons on drums. Other tracks include well known musicians, such as the Sex Pistols' Steve Jones and Paul Cook, and Blondie's Clem Burke and Frank Infante.
22 de oct. de 2018 · Background. In 1980 Joan Jett hired early benefactor Toby Mamis – co-manager of the last incarnation of The Runaways – as her de-facto manager, and the pair brought in former Sex Pistols Paul Cook and Steve Jones to produce and play on a demo.

Too many people held this negative view of me because I played electric guitar. They said I was mean because of how I looked. I had this supposed ‘bad reputation’ because I was doing exactly what I wanted to do.

Although many things have no doubt changed since I walked the high school halls, it's sad to see some things have stayed the same - all the wrong things.
Recording for this album began at ODO (Soundworks Studio) in New York City on June 23, 1981. Joan Jett recalls, "When I came back from England, after recording the Bad Reputation album, I had to get a band together because I have to be on the road. I advertised for "Three good men to play bass, drums and guitar - No Show-Offs, Please."
