Here's my short account of building the Jim Michalak Mayfly 14 and sailing it. I bought the plans from Ductwork's after looking through what I thought was at least a hundred designs. I choose the Mayfly14 for three reasons: First, it was relatively small and fits in the back of my F-150 truck, eliminating the need for a trailer.
I didn't start out with any intent to build Jim Michalak's designed Harmonica, a small 5-foot by 13-foot shanty style houseboat. To be honest, I'd never even heard about the Harmonica. What I wanted to build was an even smaller 4-foot by 12-foot shanty style houseboat named the Ugly Duck.

Here's a few pics of the Michalak Family Skiff I built, with help and supplies from Duckworks, on its maiden voyage.There's been years of delays but I'm finally learning to sail in my own homebuilt boat! The trip to nearby Pickwick Lake on the Tennessee River was overall great fun, even though a few glitches were experienced launching and loading on the home customized trailer.
