Los dos comenzaron a componer música bajo el nombre de Mainstream y pronto realizarían lo que sería el primer EP del dúo: “Mainstream EP”. Poco después, el dúo cambió el nombre al actual Metric en el que según Emily Haines tuvo su raíz en el nombre de un sonido que había compuesto James Shaw.

The band started in 1998 as a duo formed by Haines and Shaw with the name "Mainstream". After releasing an EP titled Mainstream EP, they changed the band's name to Metric. The band's first studio album, Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?, was released in 2003.
