History. Early years. Steeleye Span began in late 1969, when London-born bass player Ashley Hutchings left Fairport Convention, the band he had co-founded in 1967.

This compilation covers the Steeleye Span years from 1969-1972, which covered their first three albums, and the Tim Hart/Maddy Prior partnership of 1968 which saw them release two volumes of english folk songs. The twenty tracks on here are nearly all arrangements of traditional folk songs.
