Hiram Winard Harper (born June 4, 1962) is an American jazz drummer. Career. Harper played in the 1980s with Dexter Gordon, Johnny Griffin, and with Betty Carter for four years. While working with Carter he met Wycliffe Gordon, with whom Harper would collaborate repeatedly. [1]

Winard Harper, celebrated jazz drummer and leader of his own groups for most of his professional life, was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1962. He was encouraged to play the drums by his father who noticed him beating on cans as a toddler.
During the latter half of the 1980s and early 1990s, the Harper Brothers band was one of the most exhilarating of the young ensembles working out of the hard-bop tradition. Sparked by Winard Harper’s drumming, the band was effectively run by him as well, so it is hardly surprising he now makes his debut as a leader in his own right.
