The story follows Uglik, a young Eskimo, his journey of survival with two others in the Canadian Arctic, and his final confrontation with the lone polar bear which has stalked them.

The relationship steadily deteriorates with Joe's wild temper tantrums and an accident that leaves them almost defenseless against a white bear that seems to be deliberately stalking them. Eventually trapped, it is up to Uglik to destroy the bear and prove his manhood.
