After the untimely death of his parents in the 1860s, young Chad (Jimmie Rodgers) is sent to live in a remote Kentucky town where he's mentored by Maj. Buford (Chill Wills), a warmhearted old man.
Following his foster family's death during a cholera epidemic, the waif Chad is taken in by the Turners, who live in the Kentucky mountain town of Kingdom Come. Consumed by a desire to discover himself, Chad travels to Lexington, where he is befriended by Major Buford, a childless, widowed landowner.
