Return to Ithaca is a realistic and modernistic retelling of Homer's Odyssey and illustrates the moral dilemma after World War II – does good ends justify the means? The novel emphasises the repetition of history, the illusion of chronological time and the similarity of man's condition under varying circumstances.

Return To Ithaca is a retelling of The Odyssey from a twentieth century point of view. The novel brings the reader face to face with the doubts and frailties of Odysseus in modern terms. Mr. Johnson won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1974.
