University of Chicago ( JD) Rex Edwin Lee (February 27, 1935 – March 11, 1996) was an American lawyer and academic who served as the 37th solicitor general of the United States from 1981 to 1985. He was responsible for bringing the solicitor general's office to the center of U.S. legal policymaking. [citation needed]
Rex E. Lee was the 10th president of BYU from 1989 to 1995, and a prominent lawyer and educator. He served as solicitor general of the United States, taught constitutional law, and argued 59 cases before the Supreme Court.

Rex E. Lee was born in 1935 and grew up in St. John's, Arizona. He served a mission in Mexico from 1955 to 1958, then married Janet Griffin. He received a BA from Brigham Young University in 1960 and a JD from the University of Chicago in 1963. He held five honorary doctorate of law degrees.
