Nació el 26 de agosto de 1910 en la actual ciudad de Skopie, Macedonia, que en aquel momento estaba bajo el dominio del Imperio Otomano, con el nombre de Uskub. Su padre, Nikollë Bojaxhiu, era un político albanés, en tanto que el nombre de su madre era Dranafile Bernai.
