This Naxos release begins with the second of Godard’s two violin concertos (Opus 131 no less), which is in the customary three movements and plays for an ideal 25 minutes; ‘ideal’ because Godard clearly places value on classical proportion as well as writing agreeable music.
The late Concerto #2 is even better, though. Here, Godard the composer of grand operas, as well as lighter works for the musical stage, can be heard, and the influence of Mendelssohn seems particularly strong as well.
The Scènes Poétiques are charming little orchestral pictures written when Godard was thirty. The Concerto Romantique was written in 1887 eight years before Godard’s early death.
