In 1976, after seeing a couple of punk rock shows at The Roxy, the band decided to become a punk rock band, changing their name at first to the Subversives but later modifying it to the U.K. Subs. The band consisted of founder Charlie Harper, guitarist Nicky Garratt, bassist Paul Slack, and a drummer who went under the name Rory Lyons.

Nicky Garratt. Born in Leicestershire, England in 1955, Nicky Garratt is an internationally recognized guitar player and vegetarian chef. In 1977, he released his first recording (live from the infamous Roxy club in London) with his punk rock band UK Subs. Success followed with five nationally charting albums and eight singles.
U.K. Subs. Alongside their contemporaries, London’s never-say-die UK Subs’ 1977-vintage punk sounds old-fashioned, yet Nicky Garratt’s wall-of-sound rhythm guitar and Charlie Harper’s chanted/sung vocals make for highly enjoyable charged rock’n’rage.
The band initially started in 1976 as "The Subversives" with singer Charlie Harper. When the band line-up was based around Harper's growling Cockney vocals with Nicky Garratt on Guitar, Paul Slack on Bass and a variety of drummers they became the "U.K. subversives", later shortened to "U.K. Subs".
