Located in Stoke Bishop on the edge of The Bristol Downs. The building known as Wills Hall to generations of its young residents was originally called “Downside House.”. Built in the Strawberry Hill Gothic style, in the 1830s the first historical reference to it as a family house is from the 1841 Tithe Map.
A HISTORY OF WILLS HALL. Wills Hall is named for Henry Herbert Wills (1856-1922), a philanthropist and businessman, a member of a family of tobacco merchants prominent in Bristol and a family ultimately responsible for the foundation of the University.
About the Wills Hall Association. The Wills Hall Association is the oldest and largest of the hall alumni associations in Bristol. We are an important channel for the voices of past and present members of Wills Hall, articulating the unique character of the Hall, and helping past and present members to enhance the experiences of future residents.

The building was originally built as a German singing society's hall in 1899, the same year that J. Walter Wills came to Cleveland. It later housed a Hungarian immigrants' hospital and a Jewish school.
