He returned to PJC to set then national junior college records in the 100 sprint (9.6 seconds), 220 (20.9) and broad jump (25 feet, 5.5 inches, a record broken the next year by Jackie).

By 1946, increased enrollment justified the establishment of a second four-year junior college—John Muir.
