When she arrived at the S.T. Taylor School of Design, she was shunned by the school’s director because of her race. He allowed her to attend the school, but segregated her in another classroom because her classmates refused to be in the same space with an African American.
In 1917, Lowe and her son moved to New York City, where she enrolled at S. T. Taylor Design School. As the school was segregated , Lowe was required to attend classes in a room alone. [11] However, segregation did not stop her, and she still managed to rise above her peers in school.
After dedicating several years to building her reputation as an accomplished dressmaker, Lowe moved to Tampa, Florida, where she developed a loyal and elite clientele by designing dresses for socialites. In 1917, she traveled to New York City to attend the S.T. Taylor School of Design.
In 1917 Lowe studied at New York's S.T. Taylor Design School. With racial segregation the common practice even in the North, Lowe "was separated from the other students and had her own space where she worked," Davis said, "but her work was so exceptional that she was used as an example."
