Stahl invited friend Dave Grohl to come and visit The Viper Room to see Tenacious D, though Grohl initially didn't want to go. Grohl changed his stance and went to see the band perform a couple of weeks later and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Tenacious D lanzó su primer disco, homónimo, en 2001. Cuenta con la participación de músicos invitados como Dave Grohl (exbaterista de Nirvana , vocalista y líder de Foo Fighters ), Page McConnell (tecladista de Phish ), Warren Fitzgerald (guitarrista de The Vandals ), y el bajista Steve McDonald .
Dave Grohl plays drums on the album, as he did on their first album, Tenacious D (2001). Grohl also contributes his vocals on "Beelzeboss (The Final Showdown)", as Satan. An edited version of the album was also released, replacing all of the profanity with made-up nonsense words.
